While home ownership can be a very satisfying and rewarding experience, it does bring with it a new set of responsibilities and demands. Whether you're buying a brand new home or a fixer-upper, several things will have a major impact on your lifestyle.

One of them is the need is to personally handle or manage your own repairs, decorating, and home improvements. In many cases, you can (and should) hire a professional to do the actual work, but there are a lot of projects you can do more cost-effectively on your own.

The first one that comes to mind is interior painting. If you want to keep your home looking fresh, well maintained, and visually appealing, repainting your walls and ceilings every few years is a necessity. How often you need to break out the paint brushes, rollers, and drop cloths depends on several factors. For example, some rooms are subjected to more wear and tear than others. Bedroom walls, hallways, and bathrooms often seem to need the most attention, but kitchens, family rooms, and other areas of the home are usually not far behind.

If you've been noticing that one or more of your rooms are starting to look scuffed, faded, or dull, then it may be time to roll up your sleeves and give those walls a fresh coat of paint! It always makes a dramatic difference in the look and feel of that room, and it typically can be completed in less than a day -- especially if you team up with an energetic spouse, friend, or family member. If you're focused and organized, a room-painting project can often be completed by lunchtime. (Depending on who's providing the help, however, you might be expected to provide lunch!)

When procrastination is a problem, taking small steps will often help you gather momentum and keep moving forward on your painting project. An easy, but necessary first step is to pick out and bring home an assortment of color samples from your local hardware or paint store. Holding them up to your walls and seeing whether they complement existing furniture, flooring, and decorating schemes will help you choose a color you'll be satisfied with.

If you're not ready to tackle the project right away, you can still purchase the paint, rollers, and other supplies. Assuming you're not going to postpone the project indefinitely, you'll be a lot more likely to get started in the near future if the supplies are already in the house. You'll be streamlining the process and nudging yourself to get the job done soon by purchasing the painting supplies and having them close at hand.

While motivating yourself to do projects around the house may sometimes seem to be the biggest hurdle to clear, starting small and gaining momentum as you go is often an effective way to keep your home looking its best at all times!

Trying to successfully manage the many demands of a growing family, a high maintenance home, and a stressful career is no easy task, but most of us seem to get the hang of it after a while! With so many priorities to handle, though, things don't always work out as planned. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to help smooth out the rough spots and avoid some of the pitfalls of modern life. Here are a few miscellaneous ideas to help you accomplish that.

  1. Be security conscious. Even if you live in what you consider to be a safe neighborhood, all it takes is one incident to rob you of your sense of security -- not to mention any valuables that might be lying around. While there are a handful of small, close-knit communities out there where folks feel comfortable leaving their doors unlocked, it's still better to exercise a little caution. Unless you can depend on your neighbors to keep a close eye on your house when you're not at home, locking doors and windows before you leave is a smart safety practice.
  2. Get at least three estimates. Whether you're planning on remodeling your kitchen, repaving your driveway, or having the exterior of your house painted, you can often save thousands of dollars by getting and comparing three written quotes. When you talk to contractors and other service providers, you'll also get a sense of how easy or difficult they are to work with. If they're impatient with your questions or slow to respond to emails and phone messages, then you're probably seeing a preview of what they'd be like on the job.
  3. Get a dehumidifier for your basement. If your basement is dry and you don't have any drainage issues outside your house, then this suggestion may not apply to you. However, if your basement humidity level is approaching 60%, a dehumidifier may be necessary to help prevent mold growth, indoor air quality problems, and other issues. (Monitoring tip: Inexpensive humidity gauges are available at hardware stores and online.) Preventing mold growth before it takes hold can potentially save you thousands of dollars in mold remediation costs. If your basement is wet, musty smelling, or has visible signs of mold or mildew, consulting with a certified mold assessor or a basement waterproofing company can help you identify the extent of the problem, as well as what to do about it.
  4. Research dog breeds before choosing a family pet. All dog breeds have different characteristics, personality traits, exercise needs, and training requirements. Unfortunately, some families choose a puppy based on how cute it is, rather than how well it will fit into their lifestyle. Dogs generally need a lot of attention, especially when they're being housebroken and acclimated to daily routines. To help ensure a successful relationship with your new dog, it's important that every member of the family understand the responsibility that comes with pet ownership: It's a labor of love and a long-term commitment.

Take the below actions and you could keep your house in good condition.Your home's value might also stay at peak levels.

Just because you've lived at your house for years, doesn't mean your house has to fall apart

Apply fresh paint - Climb up on a ladder and apply a fresh coat of paint to your house. If you have pets, consider painting the bottom edge of your house twice a year.

Care for house siding - Modern homes aren't the only houses built with siding. Several older homes are covered with siding instead of paint, as siding is generally easier to care for. To keep house siding in good condition, wash the siding with warm water and a cleansing solution. Use a long brush to scrub the siding,moving from the bottom to the top of your house. Then, rinse the siding with clear, warm water. Do this at least once a year.

Keep lawns litter free - Pick trash off your lawn. Teach your family members to clean up after themselves. A good way to remember to clean your lawn is to walk around your home and inspect the front and back yard for litter a few minutes before you mow the lawn. During cooler months, simply rake litter into a garbage bag with tree leaves.

Perform regular inspections - Check for frayed wires, cracks, dents and holes in walls.Replace, patch up or repair these areas before they get worse. You could also hire a professional home inspector to examine your house every two to three years.

Stay clean -Regularly sweep interior and exterior floors. Also, wipe down walls and windows. If your floors are carpeted, wash the carpet once a quarter. You may need to wash heavy traffic areas once a month. Other cleaning activities include dusting and washing ceiling fans and washing floorboard edges.

Live clutter free - Clutter hides holes, cracks and stains. Store boxes in the garage or attic. Leave lots of walking space in your home to allow for good air flow.

Maintain a healthy house roof - Of all parts of your house, the roof may be the most troublesome,especially if you let your roof deteriorate. To maintain a healthy house roof,clean out your gutters. Replace damaged shingles. Trim away low hanging tree branches and clean away ice patches.

Repair and replace home appliances - Clean air ducts and replace home appliances like water heaters and refrigerators. Also, keep air conditioner filters clean.These steps not only help to keep home appliances functioning properly, they can also lower your utility bills.

Replace floor tiles - Replace bubbling, sagging or cracked floor tiles. Do this with vinyl,ceramic and hard wood floor tiles.

The style of your rooms also plays a major role in the overall value of your home. By installing new kitchen and bathroom cabinets, your house can maintain a modern look. The same applies for ceiling moldings and floor. Step back once a year,look at your home, and ask yourself if your house is as stylish or as elegant as newly developed houses.

Wait, when was the last time you cleaned that ? And how often are you supposed to wash that? Never have to ask yourself these questions again by creating a monthly chore calendar. Creating a chore calendar may seem like you’re taking your house cleaning duties a little too seriously, but by creating a regular cleaning schedule you will set yourself up for success. And you’ll have a guaranteed cleaner home, and who doesn’t want that? Monthly

  • Scrub grout in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Wash pillow and mattress protectors as well as duvet covers.
  • Discard any food in the freezer that has become freezer burnt or is past its time.
  • Wax any wood floors your home may have.
  • Dust fans you have throughout your home. Don’t forget to do this in the winter when they are not in use to avoid build-up.
  • Wipe down and disinfect light switch plates and door knobs.
  • Wipe down and disinfect your home phones and your family’s cell phones.
  • Flush drains. Try a natural solution by pouring baking soda down drains and allowing to sit overnight to deodorize. In the morning pour hot water down the drain to rinse the baking soda out and flush the drain.
  • Wipe down walls, doors and baseboards.
  • Check the fire alarms throughout your home and replace any batteries when necessary.
Weekly
  • Dust each room in your home.
  • Empty all trash bins throughout your home. Don’t forget smaller, less used baskets like in your child’s room or in the office.
  • Clean sinks, toilets, and bath of any soap scum or buildup.
  • Vacuum and mop the floors throughout your home.
  • Wipe down surfaces like tables and counters.
  • Clean mirrors and windows.
  • Wash sheets and pillowcases.
  • Sort through your mail and email inbox. Pay any upcoming bill and file paperwork as necessary.
  • Clean fridge out of any food that has gone past its expiration.
  • Wipe down appliances in the kitchen such as the microwave, stove, and toaster.
  • Wipe down and deodorize trashcans and recycling bins.
  • Put out fresh towels in your bathrooms and kitchen
Daily
  • Tidy up. Keep on top of clutter by putting items away when they are no longer in use.
  • Make the beds and if your children are old enough encourage them to make theirs.
  • Sort out mail. File and discard as necessary.
  • Clean up as you prepare meals to leave time to relax after dinner time instead of spending another hour in the kitchen.
  • Wipe up any spills as they happen to avoid having to use elbow grease to clean up later.
  • Sweep the kitchen floor and any other high traffic areas.
  • Throw in a load of laundry. If you have a large family make laundry more manageable by doing a load a day.
Keeping your home clean is hard work, there is no doubt about that, especially if you have a family. However, by creating a monthly chore calendar you can create a more manageable workload for yourself. With a little planning up front you can have a neat and tidy home you can sit back and truly enjoy!

Life can be busy and tending to houselhold items can often times be overwhelming. Doing the little things will help prevent big problems later on. Here are five quick and easy fixes you can do around in your home in a just a few short hours. Do the Little Things Walk through your home and make a list of any broken electrical plates, locks that need lubrication, sinks or tubs that need caulk. Take a quick trip to the home improvement store and get all of the items to finish up these little jobs. That way you can get it all done in one concerted effort. Rotate Your Mattress Flip, spin and vacuum your mattress. This helps keep your mattress lasting longer and may also help you catch some more Zzzz's. Clean One Closet Choose an easy one to clean at first and pick a day to do it in. Pull everything out and start from scratch. Make a pile of things to give away or donate. Things that are stained or torn can be used for rags. If you haven't used it in the last year get rid of it. Conduct an Energy Audit It would be great to see if you could save money on your utility bills. Call the utility company and ask for an energy audit. They will make recommendations to help you improve the efficiency of your home. Clean the Dryer Vent To achieve maximum energy efficiency and to prevent a fire hazard clean the dryer  vent twice a year. Remove the tube that attaches to the machine and clear out the lint. Don't forget to clean the outside vent, too. It is the little things that add up, so keeping the easy tasks under control will have you more prepared to tackle a bigger task.
